Taveras has been a supporter of same sex marriage and presided over the first same sex marriages in Providence. He has been a strong proponent of charter schools. He went so far as to fire all of the teachers in Providence and later re-hiring them. Taveras signed ordinances to limit the ability of the tobacco industry to sell in Providence. The first one banned the sale of tobacco flavored products in the city; the second ordinance banned the redemption of coupons and multi-pack discounts that are there to circumvent state pricing restrictions.
